As the grapevines flower and the new shoots extend beyond the top wires of the trellises, it is a wonderful reminder that a warm holiday season is upon us. With this in mind we are reflecting on the past year, which has been one of many successes and achievements for Obsidian Wines and our team. Here are a few highlights from 2017:
Michael Wood, Winemaker of the Year 2017
Obsidian’s winemaker, Michael Wood, was thrilled to accept the award of New Zealand’s Winemaker of the Year 2017 from the Canterbury A&P Wine Show in October. Michael won the award after submitting three wines, the Obsidian Reserve Syrah 2015, the Obsidian Reserve ‘The Mayor’ 2013 and the Obsidian Reserve ‘The Obsidian’ 2015, which all displayed finesse, consistency and inimitability. Congratulations Mike!
Tim Adams, Young Viticulturist of the Year 2017
Our vineyard manager, Tim Adams, contended fiercely in a series of competitive events for the title of Bayer Young Viticulturist of the Year 2017. Tim participated in trials such as completing set viticultural tasks at a number of work stations, ‘Horty Sports’ (where the contestant completes diverse activities), a general knowledge quiz, putting together budgets and designing vineyard operations, and presenting a speech on a given topic to take out the title. Tim also went on to win runner-up in the New Zealand Young Horticulturist of the Year 2017 competition in November.
Obsidian Wines, Auckland/Northland region representative for Raymond Chan’s Winery of the Year 2017
As the only representative for Auckland/Northland for Raymond Chan’s Winery of the Year 2017, we were honoured to be able to contend for the title, as Chan includes wineries based on their qualities and significance in the booming New Zealand wine industry, their history of high awards and accolades, their appeal to both wine enthusiasts and consumers, their innovation and style, and their involvement in setting the standards for producing fine New Zealand wine.
Best Syrah from New Zealand’s 2014 Vintage
The Obsidian Reserve Syrah 2014 achieved the highest rating (93 Points) of any New Zealand Syrah from the 2014 vintage in July 2017 from the world’s most cited wine publication, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Lisa Perrotti-Brown noted the following:
“Medium to deep garnet coloured, the 2014 Syrah Reserve has a meaty nose over a core of warm blackberries, black cherries, black pepper, dark chocolate and liquorice with a waft of exotic spices. Full-bodied rich and opulently fruited in the mouth, it has a spicy core supported by rounded tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and savoury.”
