Obsidian Estate 'Vitreous' 2015: Wine of the Month, April 2018

Obsidian Estate 'Vitreous' 2015: Wine of the Month, April 2018

It was an absolutely stunning Easter Weekend at the vineyard this year, with the days being long, hot and dry. This made it the perfect opportunity for our winemaker Mike and vineyard manager Tim to get out with our team of pickers and harvest our beautifully pristine Cabernet Franc grapes. These Cabernet Franc grapes will be blended with varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to produce our Bordeaux-style blends for 2018. In honour of this, we've decided our April Wine of the Month will be none other than our Vitreous 2015!

Obsidian Estate Vitreous 2015

Vitreous is the word used to describe the reflective, shimmering surface of an object, such as the glass-like rock, Obsidian. No wonder then that this Bordeaux-style blend displays a deep, lustrous purple with an oxblood hue and a dark core. The Vitreous is a blend of five varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, which all bring their own individual characteristics to the overall flavour of the wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon imbues a dark berry-filled mid-palate and a hint of blackcurrant leaf on the nose, while the Merlot adds a soft, plush texture and chocolate plum overtones. The Cabernet Franc delivers nuances of sweet red berry fruit and liquorice, and the Petit Verdot compliments this with floral notes of violets and sage. Finally, the Malbec provides the foundation of the blend by framing the wine in bold, finely structured tannins and dark, earthy aromas. The final product is refined, complex and weighty, and is perfect for these long Autumn evenings.

“The attractively fruited and fragrant bouquet shows dark fruit, toasted hazelnut, tobacco and mixed spice characters. It is succulent and smooth on the palate, and displays pristine fruit flavours with subtle cedary complexity, leading to a lingering tasty finish. Beautifully harmonious and approachable” – 92 points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
